Hello everyone, we hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the glorious sunshine! We are never happier than when we are crafting in the sunshine!

We are often asked where we take our craft hen party workshops. And the answer is anywhere and everywhere! This year we have noticed that more and more hen parties are opting to have their hen party celebrations at home, and bringing the hen party activities to their door.

Crafts and Giggles love being invited into peoples homes to teach craft hen party workshops. We are always made to feel so welcome, and the atmosphere is always relaxed, inspiring creativity.

If you would like to have one of our craft hen parties in your home please contact katie@craftsandgiggles.com for more information.

'How has craft altered over the last century and where are we now?'

The Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century modernised production with the introduction of machines. The ability to manufacture on a large scale meant individual crafts people were spun into this web of machine operation. What they were producing was no longer bespoke, every item on the mass production belt looked exactly the same. Although the process was profitable, the joy of producing and the appreciation of unique designs were cast aside.

The Arts and Craft movement fought back between 1880 and 1910 with support from famous designer William Morris who believed in making 'art for everyone.' This along with the rise of two tragic world wars meant that with income and rationing imposing restrictions, people from all parts of the country had to make and mend clothes and soft furnishings.

The late 1970's saw another push forward on the peddles with a revival of many different types of crafts. The word Craftsman became devalued for it's sexist intonations. The word 'Maker' being widely used for those in the movement. The height of the 'hippies' brought self fashioned bell bottoms, tie die tees and colourful crocheted ponchos.

The late 20th century saw the demise of this creative thread. Technological advancements, designer brands and drastic social turns (gender roles, domesticity, work etc) meant that sitting and knitting fell out with fashion while fashion industries soared. This along with the revolutionary introduction of the internet changed everything. People could buy anything, from anywhere, almost instantly.

Now, in 2014, although we are embracing our relationship with technology and it's benefits to our lives, we are also noticing the gaps it is creating. The only chance adults get to do something like it is when it is time to create their children's Easter bonnet. We are missing the tangible relationship between hand and tool. Whether it be turning to DIY, gardening or craft, people feel the capacity in them to make. As much as we are thankful for being able to buy clothes and accessories in shops, we are excited by the possibility that we may just be able to make something ourselves. The act of making something that is unique to us means that we gain a huge sense of achievement, accomplish a new skill set and are proud to stand out from the crowd with something that is totally hand made. The time of having to wear exactly the same as everyone else has gone. Now we appreciate difference, quirkiness and customising our own items is the way to achieve it. This goes for people who have the choice to take the hobby up while for some families, they have returned to making do as an essential requirement as the economic downfall takes hold. But actually ….is it such a disaster?

The act of making is becoming a wide spread social trend. Dates are being set aside to put the phones down, turn the laptops off and meet in person. Creative workshops are filling the gap that the surmise of the digital age created. It brings friends, families and communities together while also building new relationships. Taking part in such activity gives you time to escape, lifts moods and has proven health benefits, it is transformational. Using your brain to learn new skills engages neurological connections, making you sharper and more intuitive, meaning your boss at work will be thrilled!

If you want to feel the benefits of getting creative, take a break from the stresses of modern life and learn a new skill, Crafts and Giggles provides a multitude of craft workshops that will get you hooked. Please contact us for more information on how we can help you get started!
